Each Birmingham Prayer Furnace event is divided into "sets" lasting from one to two hours. Each set has a Set Leader. This person is responsible for helping everyone in the room stay Godward in their hearts together. Not every Set has a musician, but every Set has a prayer leader. Prayer is our goal.
There are four main types of Sets.
Devotional Sets - These are sets with music but without verbal intercession. The Devotional Set leader is usually a keyboardist who is able to minister to the Lord in song in such a way that the atmosphere of the Prayer Room is ripe for personal Bible study, journaling, resting in God's Presence, or quiet prayer and worship.
Intercessory Prayer - These sets combine verbal prayer with singers and musicians. The number of musicians and the instruments in the team vary, but there is always a Prayer Leader. The Prayer Leader may also be the Set Leader or Worship Team Leader. Musical styles vary in terms of culture. Some sets are geared to young adults, some to Spanish speakers or another ethnic group. Intercessory Prayer Sets also vary in terms of prayer topics. Some Sets may focus on pro-life issues or prayer for Israel. There are also times for the room to be invited to the microphone by the Prayer Leader to engage in small group prayer, healing prayer, or rapid fire (20 second prayers) prayers.
Worship With the Word - In these sets the team will take passages of scripture and read, pray, and sing through them. The Prayer Leader may lead prayer from the passages or there may be times where verbal prayer is offered from the room in connection with the promises or truths in the scripture.
Prophetic Intercession - These sets are led by our more seasoned Set Leaders and are more spontaneous in nature based on the testimony and leadership of Jesus in the room at the time. Prophetic Intercessory sets usually follow the UNTIL... Teaching Services and provide a way to strategically target the coporate prayer meeting in a way that leads to a spiritual breakthrough or strategic encounter.
Since the styles and formats of sets vary, it is important for potential Set Leaders to gain perspective by spending at least 6 to 8 hours participating in different sets at different times. The Night Watch from midnight to 6 am has a particular culture. Those who lead sets in the Night Watch need to participate in the 2 to 4 am Set which includes a teaching time at 2.
